Welcome

Message from the Head

Welcome to Wymondham High, an 11-18 co-educational Specialist School for the Arts & Sciences of some 1,500+ students (with 300+ in the Sixth Form and growing!).  We have held Arts Status for Music, Art and Drama for several years now and this has provided opportunities for all our students to gain a greater understanding of the Arts. In 2009 as part of our High Performing Specialist Schools Status we successfully bid for, and achieved, Science Status (with gifted and talented provision). This will not only allow us to invest in the Sciences but also enable our curriculum offering to develop at all three Key Stages to ensure that all our students have the very best Science education. The balance of Arts and Sciences is one which we believe will provide opportunities for all.

We feel proud of the high standards reached by all members of our community and our focus is on raising standards in every aspect of school life and we adopt a traditional approach which we feel will develop good citizens of the future. Courtesy, cooperation and consideration are key components of life here at the High School and smartly dressed, motivated students and high quality staff are a recipe for future success. School Concerts, Sporting fixtures, School productions, Art events, formal presentation evenings and a focus on success and achievement all contribute to the unique ethos of our school.

Head's Council

The school has good and improving facilities, extensive grounds, almost exclusive use of the local sports centre during school hours and prides itself on the pastoral care of all members of our community. We listen to our students through weekly councils of Sixth Form and main school students who meet with me to articulate their views on life at school. The School Council and House Councils meet regularly and students are involved in staff selection at the school.

The sixth form has been recognised as outstanding by Ofsted (2007) and with the focus on academic achievements all students follow a 5 AS and 4A2 Level course with a full extra curricular programme. Oxbridge and University preparation programmes and an enrichment curriculum in addition to good links with the Norfolk Connexions service ensures that  all students options to are supported. The sixth form Common Rooms, Study Rooms and separate ICT facilities enable private study, ably supported by a first class Head of Sixth Form and two Deputies (one with a responsibility for Oxbridge and Able and Talented) plus a team of specialist sixth form tutors.

Students in the main school are part of a vibrant house system and Heads of House liaise with parents over day to day matters appertaining to our students and their welfare. These key staff ensure that the home school link is always at the forefront of everything we do.  Learning and Teaching are our priority areas and students have targets set which are monitored throughout their time at the school. A friendly yet formal, traditional yet forward looking ethos underpins the notion that we expect students to enjoy learning, come to school prepared to learn and achieve. In return our students expect, quite rightly, to be rewarded and praised for that achievement.

We also value play as much as work and therefore the extra curricular offering at the school is full and varied and we demonstrate this by opening at 8 am and having a 5 period teaching day with a 6th period for sixth form study, private study and extra curricular activities for students in the main school with some 50+ clubs and societies running.

In 2005 the school was recognised by Ofsted as being one of the ‘Best of the Best’. I feel proud and privileged to lead such a fine school and would welcome visitors to come and see 'first hand'  what is on offer here, to meet the students and staff and to feel part of the inclusive community that is Wymondham High.
